Four slot and dual four slot backplanes are very useful for creating small distributed control systems. Another application of the four slot backplane is to implement redundant control systems using two real-time automation controller (RTAC) modules. The original ten slot backplane is suitable for large-scale control applications with more centralized input and output. Both AxionRTAC module and SEL-3530 RTAC now support IEC 61850 GOOSE, which can receive up to 120 messages and send 48 messages, providing greater flexibility in integrating various intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). SEL continues to develop new features for Axion. Later this year, various input/output (I/O) modules will be released, including DC analog input, AC metering, fast high current digital output, and DC analog output modules, to expand Axion's monitoring and control capabilities. SEL will also increase the flexibility of protocol selection, supporting IEC61850 MMS and IEC 60870-5 in the RTAC product line
